As I followed the directions of the GPS, I was surprised to see where they ended. It’s very interesting to me how some of the state parks are preserved for acres and some are just these small spots with housing developments and high traffic roads surrounding them.
The Madira Bickel Mound was just that, a mound. There was a short walk to the stairs that allowed me to climb to the top of the mound and when I got there I was met by a wall of trees. I suppose that was better than seeing the houses that surrounded the park. This Native American mound was the first archaeological site in the state, which is pretty cool. It has at least 3 periods of debris dating back 2,000 years; that’s amazing. I guess I was just put off by the people washing their cars a few feet away from me. It feels like something important enough to preserve should have been allotted a little more surrounding land.
