I woke up bright and early on New Year’s Day, ready to conquer another batch of state parks. This time I headed south towards the elbow of the state. I was camping in Georgia, right outside of Florida so the first park I went to wasn’t too far, about an hour away.

I arrived at Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park as soon as it opened. The rangers were still getting the park set-up for the day and the weather was still unfavorable but getting better by the minute. I walked by the Lodge, a great place to stay with a  a restaurant too. If you don’t wat to stay there, the 1935 building is open for you to take a ganger to see all of its fixings.

The swimming hole (spring) is always 70 degrees so swimming in January could be pleasant. Of course you still have to get out of the water. It is no wonder the only things on the two story swim platform were vultures. Right before I reached the spring, I noticed a nice picturesque picnic area which would be perfect for watching the performances off the diving platform.

The park also offers glass bottom boat tours of Wakulla Springs every day of the year as long as the weather permits. They do not start until 9:40 a.m. so I was not lucky enough to take one, I was there too early. I did not have the time to wait for the first boat ride because I had a full agenda for the day.

After I walked by the water I checked out the rest of the park before heading to my car.

Before you visit, make sure you check out the parks website for all of the up-to-date park information: https://www.floridastateparks.org/index.php/WakullaSprings
