While attending the Florida Native Plant Society Conference, I decided to join one of the field trips—to Sweetwater Wetlands Park. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised.
When our group arrived, we were greeted by our tour guide—and a shuttle! With the park stretching over 125 acres, that little shuttle quickly became our best friend. It allowed us to take in so much more of the landscape without wearing ourselves out.
For hours, we explored the park’s incredible biodiversity. Everywhere I looked, there was something alive and fascinating—plants, birds, and even a few lazy gators basking in the sun. Though we were at the tail end of migration season, we still managed to spot at least nine different bird species, including Sandhill Cranes, Purple Martins, and elegant Herons.
To wrap up the morning, we strolled down the boardwalk where the pickerelweed was in full bloom, painting the wetlands in shades of purple. Great Blue Herons darted in and out of view like they were playing hide and seek, adding a touch of magic to an already perfect day.
It was such a lovely way to spend the morning—surrounded by nature, new friends, and that unmistakable Florida sunshine.
