It was getting down to the wire on the state park challenge I have bestowed upon myself and after reviewing the parks I had traveled to, I noticed I missed this park in the Jacksonville area when I went State Parking with my Uncle Barry. When Brian Scott informed that he was on his last week working in Jacksonville, I took it as a sign to make a day trip and visit the park.
I picked him up and off we went to check that lonely park out together. Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park is the smallest state park and there really isn’t much to it. It was cool and high up on a bluff, looking at the Amelia River, but as far as entertainment, it was severely lacking. We still managed to have a good time, read the plaques and reflect on what once was. I think it is great that are keeping the parcel of land and not handing it over to development.
Brian and I did take advantage of the area by going a few blocks over and spending some time in the historic district of Fernandina Beach. It was a great day and worth the almost three hours it took to get there.
Before you visit, make sure you check out the parks website for all of the up-to-date park information: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/fernandina-plaza-historic-state-park
